Located about 125 km (75 miles) south of Guadalajara, in the Mexican state of Jalisco the 13,325 ft. Colima (19.5N, 103.5W) is the most active volcano in Mexico. The activity depicted occurred in early March 1991. Avalanches of ash and gas from the summit were followed soon after by lava flows and more ash and steam from the caldera. A steam plume can be seen drifting eastward from the summit and scars from the earlier avalanches can also be seen on the southwest slope of the volcano.

The volcano of Fire of Colima, (3860 m. on the level of the sea) it is an estratovolcán andesítico that is part, together with the Snow-capped mountain of Colima (4330 msnm.), of a volcanic complex placed in the Belt Neovolcánico Mexicano and whose geographical coordinates (19º30 ' 44 " N and 103º37 ' 02 " W) place it between the States of Colime (municipalities of Eat It and Cuauhtémoc) and Straw hat (municipalities of Tuxpan, Zapotitlán and Tonila.

Throughout last 500 years the Volcano of Fire of Colime has had a frequency of activity of explosive type with a number that overcomes 30 eruptions between which they stand out those of 1585, 1606, 1622, 1690, 1818, 1869, 1890, 1903 and 1913, for mentioning only someone.

Additionally, it is necessary to bear in mind the activity of minor grade, everything which demonstrates us that throughout last centuries this volcano has increased his eruptive process, and the activity that it continues supporting at present is the motive by which studies must continue being realized on his danger and risk in the moment of a new eruption.

Currently a number of vulnerable populations exist, so much in the states of Colime and Straw hat, before a possible eruption. The deposit of flows piroclásticos, rain of pómez and ashes and of mud flows or lahares, they might affect in the first instance the populations of The Yerbabuena, The Becerrera, Hill of the Water, Mess The Wild boar, Suchitlán, San Antonio and Mess the Jewel, in the State of Colime, in addition to Juan Barragán, Summer pasture, The Males, The Borobollón, Peach, San Marcos, Tonila, Brotherhood of Tonila, Causentla, The Fresnal, Atenguillo, Saucillo, The Funnel and The Chayán, in the State of Straw hat, and in the second term to other populations of both states a bit more removed like they are a Dairy, City Guzmán, Tuxpan, the city of Colime, Town of Alvarez, Eat It and Cuauhtémoc, for mentioning someone.

The activity depicted occurred in early March 1991. Avalanches of ash and gas from the summit were followed soon after by lava flows and more ash and steam from the caldera. A steam plume can be seen drifting eastward from the summit and scars from the earlier avalanches can also be seen on the southwest slope of the volcano.

The Colima Volcanic Complex is made up of two main stratovolcanoes.
The older of the two is called Nevado de Colima and has an elevation of 4,200 m.
The younger volcano, Volcan de Fuego or Volcan de Colima, is about 200 meters
smaller and is located 5 km south of Nevado.

Colima's last large explosive eruption occurred on January 20, 1913 and lasted for only four days. This eruption was characterized by its ash flows and the formation of a summit crater measuring 300 meters in depth.

The mountain remained dormant for forty-four years before it once again became active.
In 1961 Colima had an eruption that sent a small lava flow down its northern slope.

flows of lava and frequent avalanches from its summit.

back to its more violent nature of erupting explosively.
